about

This album came about while we were rehearsing for our first gig in nearly three years. We wanted to do ‘old’ tracks but often the equipment we originally used had been sold on, is just generally not being used by us or it would have been impractical to bring all of the exact gear needed for a half hour gig. So we worked out ways to play that old material on the equipment we now use routinely and has proved to be nicely portable. We worked up eight old tracks plus one new one and then decided which four or five we would do at the gig. Then rather than have the rehearsal time on the others ‘wasted’ we went back to Rock & Roll Circus a couple of weeks after the gig and recorded all eight tracks (one was discarded) “As live”.

“As live” simply means we set up two microphones in the room and plugged some DIs in (to give us some limited balancing ability in the mix) and played the music all the way through as if it were a gig. The result, warts and all pretty much, is what is on this album. As a result it’s slightly rougher than our ’studio’ recordings both in terms of audio quality and (in some cases) playing but is representative of what you would hear if you went to one of our gigs.

There are no overdubs on this album, no retakes and very few extra effects. Most of the mixing was just balancing and EQing the tracks. Occasionally, but very rarely, I’ve added a little extra reverb or delay to add ambience or cover inopportune noises but mostly what is here is what came out of the amplifiers and arrived at the microphones.
